1) Assessment of Senior Administrators
In accord with its Policy Statement on Assessment of Senior Administrators, the APUO asked members in the Faculties of Health Sciences, Medicine, and Science to complete a questionnaire assessing their respective Deans. Members can view the Fall 2022 Assessment of Senior Administrators here.
2) Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Services
In April 2022, the APUO hired Pascasie Minani Passy as our first Equity Research and Organizing Officer. During the summer, she familiarized herself with the various ways in which the APUO has offered support on anti-racist and EDI-related matters, and began formalizing these supports into two EDI-focused services.
A) Support service for members facing discrimination
When the APUO is contacted by members who experience discrimination and/or harassment relating to culture, language (e.g., relating to accent), gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, or other, an APUO grievance officer assists the member in identifying their options for recourse and supports the member throughout whichever process they choose to follow. Now, the Equity Research and Organizing Officer will be available to provide support to both the member and the grievance officer.
b) Service to facilitate inclusion and participation in the university community
Entering a new work environment requires an adjustment period for both the new employee and the workplace itself. With this in mind, the Equity Research and Organizing Officer is has put in place a mentoring service enabling new APUO members to connect with participating members in their department or faculty in order to facilitate their inclusion and participation in the university community. This service is open to all members hired in 2017 or later.
To access either of these services or for more information, please contact the Equity, Research and Organization Advisor at apuoedi@uottawa.ca or the APUO at apuo@uottawa.ca.
3) Virtual Information Session on the Campaign to Save Bernadette Child Care Centre
The Coalition to Save Bernadette Child Care Centre, which is made up of members of the Bernadette Board of Directors and its early childhood educators as well as unions and student associations from across campus, is organizing an information session about the campaign to save the Centre. This will be an opportunity for interested APUO members to learn more about the current situation, the campaign to keep the Centre open, and ways in which you can support and/or directly participate in the campaign.
The information session will be held virtually on Tuesday, November 22 at 6:00 pm. Members can click here for more information and to register for the event.
4) Update: Laurentian University
The Ontairo Auditor General has released her Special Report on Laurentian University, which details the administrative mismanagement and lack of proactive government action that led to the university filing for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in 2021. Members can read the full report here.
