a) Board of Governors Meeting

You are invited to join members of the APUO Executive Committee to observe the next meeting of the University of Ottawa Board of Governors (BoG), happening Tuesday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m. in room 083 of Tabaret Hall

The BoG is one of the highest governing bodies on campus and makes decisions on university finances and operational policies that affect students’ learning conditions and our working conditions. We invite members to attend these public meetings to see first-hand how these decisions are discussed and how our university is governed. Meet us outside the main entrance of Tabaret Hall at 3:45 p.m. and we will enter the public gallery together.

b) APUO Social

You are also invited to an APUO Social from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Métropolitain Brasserie and Restaurant following the Board of Governors. The Métropolitain is located at 700 Sussex Drive. We hope to see you there!

2) CAUT Advisory on Travel to the United States

The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) published an Advisory on Travel to the United States on April 15. It “strongly recommends that academic staff travel to the US only if essential and necessary” and that “academics who fall in the following categories exercise particular caution:

  • Citizens or residents of a country identified in media reports as likely to be subject to a travel ban
  • Citizens or residents of a country where there are diplomatic tensions with the U.S.
  • Travellers with passport stamps evidencing recent travel to countries that may be subject to a travel ban or where there are diplomatic tensions with the U.S.
  • Those who have expressed negative opinions about the current U.S. administration or its policies
  • Those whose research could be seen as being at odds with the position of the current U.S. administration
  • Travellers who identify as transgender or whose travel documents indicate a sex other than their sex assigned at birth.

We encourage members to read the Advisory in full as well as CAUT’s Supplement to the Advisory, especially if you are considering travel to the United States.

3) CAUT Unlock Education Campaign

The Canadian Association of University Teachers launched a campaign urging political parties to support affordable and accessible post-secondary education and research. This means:

  • Making college and university affordable for everyone
  • Freedom to think, teach and learn
  • Including new people and new perspectives
  • University and colleges we can rely on.

The Unlock Education campaign encourages Canadians to speak out against chronic government underfunding, increasing program cuts on campuses across the country and skyrocketing tuition fees. Check out the campaign and take action here. With the federal election day just around the corner, let’s put education on the ballot!
